Fried Carrot Cake

Hock Soon Carrot Cake does really nice fried carrot cake in both black and white varieties. This fried carrot cake uses longish cubes of radish cakes with generous amounts of chye poh and eggs added.

The white version has a very nice smokey wok hei taste, and with the savoury tastes from chye poh, it is nice. The black version has sweet black sauce added giving it mildly sweet flavours. There are pockets of crispiness and the crispy parts are good. Personally I like a black ones here a bit more than the white ones.

Satay

Hock Soon Carrot Cake also does very nice satay, in pork, chicken and mutton. The satay has nice flavourings and are very nicely grilled with light charring. The pork ones come with a piece of fatty pork. The chicken ones are tender and moist. The mutton has a nice mild sweetness in its seasoning and no gamey tastes. As for the satay sauce, thick and nutty and lightly spicy. Nice!

Rojak

Hock Soon Carrot Cake also sells rojak which is actually quite decent. It comes with the usual you tiao, tau pok, sliced cucumbers and sliced pineapples, but that’s not all. This plate of rojak includes slices of red apples and winter melon slices. All these are mixed in a rojak sauce that isn’t too sweet and topped with crushed peanuts. Although the rojak sauce is the watery type, the you tiao and tau pok are crispy! I like it.
